Few things constitute a perfect summer evening or weekend like a non-stop music festival. Good food, warm weather and great music explode in Ohio this summer with a roster of some of the coolest summer music festivals.

Gahanna Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival - June 20-22 – Gahanna

One of my favorite can’t-miss summer music events is the Gahanna Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival. For 16 years the Gahanna Convention and Visitors Bureau has transformed Olde Gahanna into a playground of great Jazz music suitable for a lazy summer weekend. I love grabbing a hearty pulled pork sandwich from one of the many BBQ vendors, then kicking my feet up near one of the five stages and enjoying more than 90 hours of live music with 40,000 of my closest Ohio friends! There’s also dozens of food vendors, a bourbon & whiskey tasting event, art vendors, a Musical Discovery Zone and a kid’s activities area.   

Bunbury Music Festival – July 11-13 – Cincinnati 

The Bunbury Music Festival, along the banks of the Ohio River, is more than a festival, it’s an experience. In fact, event organizers encourage you to make the festival part of a larger road trip to enjoy the other great things that Cincinnati has to offer. The festival will be at Cincinnati’s Sawyer Point and Yeatman’s Cove. The musical lineup includes: Fall Out Boy, Empire of the Sun, The Flaming Lips, Paramore, Fitz and the Tantrums, Young the Giant, New Politics, Cage the Elephant and more. It is a lively crowd, but be advised, no moshing, crowd surfing or stage diving is allowed.

Jamboree in the Hills –July 17-20 - Belmont

Keith Urban, Little Big Town, Montgomery Gentry, Tim McGraw, Joe Diffie, Neal McCoy, Diamond Rio and Darius Rucker are just some of the acts at this year’s Jamboree in the Hills music festival. In its 36^th year, the Jamboree is the longest running and most popular country music festival in the nation. More than 100,000 music fans will roll in for the star-packed venue for four fabulous days of music. Many fans commute from surrounding states to see so many headliners in one spot. The on-site campground houses more than 5,000 campers. If you are a country music fan, this festival is a must-see experience.

Fashion Meets Music Festival - August 29-31 (Labor Day weekend) – Columbus  

In a fun fusion of music and fashion, the Fashion Meets Music Festival is the nation’s largest event celebrating both art forms. Nationwide Boulevard turns into a fashion runway complete with models and live music. This colorful event showcases 500 performances with 250 artists as they celebrate music and music-inspired fashion. Musical acts cover genres of Rock, Pop, R&B, Punk and Alternative. Plus, a Retail Marketplace at the Columbus Convention Center will feature hundreds of vendors. For those who want to enjoy the full weekend, Urban Camping and After Party tickets are available.

Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest – July 18-20 – Columbus

It just seems like Jazz music and BBQ ribs were meant to go together. This year at the Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest enjoy music on three stages featuring local, regional and national jazz artists while you fill your stomach with award-winning ribs and BBQ. This year’s musical lineup includes: The Soul Rebels, Brian Culbertson, Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Terence Blanchard. On the food front, 22 award-winning BBQ teams will compete for the title of “Best Ribs.” The event that started 35 years ago as a Jazz in July series now draws thousands of people to the Arena District riverfront. This year is no exception!

Macy's Music Festival  – July 25-26 – Cincinnati

Originally called the Ohio Valley Jazz Festival in 1962, the Macy's Music Festival has grown and evolved into an amazing two-day event on Cincinnati's riverfront.  Enjoy the sound of  R&B, jazz, soul, and hip-hop, and more. This year's fesival includes Charlie Wilson, Chaka Khan, New Edition, Mint Condition, NE-YO, Robin Thicke, Keyshia Cole, K Michelle, After 7, and Chrisette Michelle.

In 2005, Macy's became the headline sponsor for the event, which draws in more than 50,000 a year from around the country.

 

A Trip to Ohio's Rubber City

After recently moving to downtown Akron for a new job, I have settled in quite nicely, much in part due to the wide variety of things to do in the county seat of Summit County!

As the fifth largest city in the state, Akron has thoroughly impressed me with its exciting food offerings, wide variety of entertainment and nightlife, and its own unique and charming personality that make Akron a great place to visit on a day trip or weekend excursion!

What everyone needs most on any road trip is sustenance, and Akron definitely delivers! Probably the most iconic restaurant in town is Luigi's, an Italian joint known for its mouthwatering pizza and cheese-tastic salads! If you go here, be sure to bring cash, as Luigi's does not accept credit cards.

If you are looking for more variety, you can try the ultra-swanky yet ultra-affordable Crave restaurant! Your tastebuds will go on quite an adventure with dishes like the BLT (bacon/lettuce/fried green tomato) and smoked gouda macaroni & cheese with blackened chicken!

Other great dining options include: Bricco (an upscale small chain in the area), Cilantro (Asian food and sushi), and Urban Eats.

For great bar food and a wide selection of drinks for adult trips, be sure to go to Baxter's and the Lockview, both located on Main Street.

Once your belly is full, it's time to explore Akron's art and culture! The Akron Art Museum is a must-see. The building itself is quite a piece of art! Inside, you're bound to find exquisite regional, national and international exhibits! 

Driving a few blocks from the art museum, you can find my personal favorite art structure in town: the Dale Chihuly Polymer Sculpture on the University of Akron campus. This 40-foot tall structure is quite a marvel.

You can also get a taste of the arts by seeing a show at The Akron Civic Theatre, which is one of only five atmospheric theatres of its kind left in the country! The theatre hosts concerts and other live entertainment events. Treat yourself to a show or pop in and look around at the architecture - it's absolutely stunning!

Other venues to catch awesome live and local music are Jilly's Music Room (a brand new, modern and exhilerating nightclub), and Musica.

Depending on what time of the year you are visiting, you can head to the Lock 3 Park to either catch an outdoor concert or skate on the 10,000-square-foot ice rink. You can also go running or biking on the Towpath Trail, which connects at Lock 3 Park!

Another seasonal option for you and your family is a baseball game at Canal Park, where the newly-named Akron Rubber Ducks take the field. 

As you continue falling in love with Akron, stop by Rubber City Clothing before you leave town and buy yourself some Akron apparel to show your support of one of Ohio's rising cities!

 

Cleveland’s PlayhouseSquare Theater District Draws Top Acts

Did you know Cleveland is home to the largest performing arts center outside of New York City? Yes! The PlayhouseSquare theater district is right here in the heart of it all - Ohio.

Annually more than one million guests visit the eight unique theater spaces that make up the “square." The theater organization is not-for-profit and also puts on special tours, community educational events and arts development actives throughout the year.

The shows and experiences here are so varied they can fit any interest. From a family outing to an evening out with girlfriends or a special date night, PlayhouseSquare fits the bill. Past and present productions have included "Wicked", "Chicago", "Porgy and Bess" and "Sweeney Todd." Countless nationally-recognized musical acts have played here too.

Last summer I had the unique experience of taking a behind-the-scenes tour of PlayhouseSquare where I learned lesser-known facts about this historic complex, such as ongoing restoration efforts in each theater building and how the theater district was nearly lost during the blight of 1960's inner city America.

Six main theaters make up the district along with one theater lab, used often for student productions, and the Second Stage theater, an adaptable space that can be configured to accommodate audiences of varying sizes.

Outside of live performances, PlayhouseSquare also hosts speakers, opera, ballet, has a summer movie series and more! Drink and concession stands are also on site.

The theaters are within walking distance from some of downtown Cleveland’s finest dining and accommodations. Ample parking is available nearby in lots and garages. Bon Appetit: The Refectory's Jazz Dinner Club

Dining at The Refectory in Columbus has been on my Central Ohio bucket list for quite awhile.

The French restaurant and bistro began as a church--Bethel United Methodist Church--in the mid-19th century. Through the years and decades, the structure underwent many changes, additions and even a move; eventually, it became too small to accommodate its congregation and was sold to a group that transformed it into a restaurant, The Olde Church-House.

The Refectory (the word for an eating room or dining hall in a monastery or convent) acquired its current name when it was purchased in 1980. As its website so eloquently phrases it: “The Refectory, to some a landmark of dining greats in this city: to others, a link to yesterday where, beneath its old majestic ceiling, the spirit of its past and the presence for which it was set apart can still be felt.”

The majesty of the old structure is evident as soon as you pass through the entrance. It feels elegant yet inviting, as if you’ve just walked into a friend’s (very nice) home.

We don’t usually go to the type of restaurant where you check your coat (that happens when you have two kids under the age of four), so attending the Refectory’s Jazz Dinner Club last month was a step out of our comfort zone.  It was in celebration of our five year wedding anniversary so we wanted to do something special. 

We’d researched the four-course prix fixe menu ahead of time: Chilled Shrimp and Pumpkin Ragout with Shiitake Mushroom and Arabiatta Vinaigrette; Butternut Squash Veloute with Duck Confit and Roasted Ohio Turnips; Duet of Grilled Veal Medallion and Roasted Scallop with Porcini Supreme Sauce Roasted; and for dessert, Chocolate Terrine and Almond Terrine Pistachio Crème Anglais.

Did we know what half those things were? Nope. It made for such an exciting, pushing-the-boundaries-of-our-taste-buds evening. Had we gone just for dinner, we’d undoubtedly have played it much more conservative. (Me: Pasta or seafood. Husband: Steak.)

The Jazz Dinner Club takes place in a smaller, private room of the restaurant with a number of round tables set up throughout. Reservations are required for the music events, which are limited to the first 38 people.

We took a seat at a table for two in the corner. The atmosphere was calming, with candlelight and the clinking of wine glasses and faint chatter as people waited for the evening to start. We looked over an extensive wine list (you can also choose to add a preselected wine flight to complement the evening’s menu, or try a glass or bottle of your own) and were cordially introduced to the gentleman who organized the Jazz Dinner Club series.

The evening’s music was a special treat: The very talented Adam Schlenker Trio--that evening featuring Denison University music professor and fiddler extraordinaire Andy Carlson--filled the room with an upbeat fusion of jazz, folk and bluegrass with some laid-back chatter between songs to share the stories behind the music. It was easy to look around and see smiles at every table--and even a toe tap and head bob or two.

Every course of our meal was enjoyable and clearly had been meticulously selected and prepared. We would have had a great time just eating at the Refectory, I’m sure--but Jazz Dinner Club took our anniversary celebration to a new level, one that we’re certainly glad we got to experience.

Ashtabula Covered Bridge Festival

Ohio in the fall always puts me in the mood for a road-trip. The changing colors of leaves and the smell of apple cider make the season really come alive. This year, join me as I head to northern Ohio for the Ashtabula Covered Bridge Festival.

Northern Ohio at the peak of autumn is spectacular! An online tour map that you can print makes it easy to take a self-guided tour through Ashtabula County to see each of the 18 covered bridges.

If you visit during the second weekend in October you can also take part in the 30^th Annual Ashtabula Covered Bridge festival. The festival takes place  October 12 & 13 (9:00am – 5:00pm) at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds. Admission is $3 or $5 for a two-day pass. Children under 12 are FREE.

While the covered bridges are the stars of the show, there is a weekend of fun planned including kid’s rides, tractor pulls, a farmer’s market, quilt show, crafts, lots of food and entertainment.

Keep an eye out for demonstrations from chainsaw carvers, karate experts and basket weavers.

If you really want to get involved, take a chance in one of the many contests taking place around the festival including:

The covered bridge festival celebrates and commemorates the crown jewels of Ashtabula county—those famous bridges. You will see five types of bridges throughout the area: Howe truss, Pratt truss, Town lattice truss, Burr Arch and Inverted Haupt truss. You can talk to bridge experts at the festival to learn about the different types of bridges and their significance.

Fill up the gas tank, grab you map and camera and hit the road for one of the most scenic fall drives you will ever experience. 

Battle of Lake Erie bicentennial culminates with re-enactment and tall ships

Summer offered plenty of opportunities to celebrate the Battle of Lake Erie bicentennial and the lasting peace achieved because of it between the United States, Canada and Great Britain, but as with many festive occasions, organizers saved some of the best events for last.

The season-long celebration culminates with several events sure to be highlights of the commemoration of Oliver Hazard Perry's victory:

• August 29-September 10

  Labor Day weekend sees the arrival of tall ships in Lake Erie ports that include Catawba Island, Port Clinton, Kelleys Island, Middle Bass Island and the Canadian ports of Kingsville, Amherstburg and Windsor to kick off a final 12-day celebration.

• August 29

  Set sail from Sandusky aboard the tall ship Goodtime I at noon for an afternoon in Put-in-Bay. The Goodtime I also offers a daytime Tall Ships Festival Cruise on August 31 and an evening fireworks cruise on September 1.

• August 30-September 1

  Put-in-Bay's DeRivera Park becomes Re-enactment Village where the Battle of Lake Erie Living History Group sets up a period encampment. The park also hosts musical performances, a food and beer garden, art displays and much more throughout the weekend.

  Tour the US Brig Niagara at Put-in-Bay harbor. This 1988-built replica of the 1813 Niagara, which played a crucial role in the Battle of Lake Erie, includes timbers from the original ship.

  Tour the tall ships Pathfinder and Playfair at Port Clinton. These sister ships are part of a summer youth sail training program on the Great Lakes.

• August 31

  Learn 19th century dances and vie for prizes awarded for most authentic War of 1812 era attire at the Niagara Event Center during the Regency Benefit Ball.

• September 1

  The Ohio State Marching Band performs at Waterworks Park in Port Clinton at 12:30 p.m. and travels to Put-in-Bay to parade through the Village Square and stage an 8:00 p.m. performance at Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial.

• September 1

  Watch fireworks over the harbor at Put-in-Bay at the end of the OSU performance.

• September 2

  Sixteen tall ships converge near Put-in-Bay to re-enact the historic Battle of Lake Erie. The battle begins around 11:30 a.m. and lasts until around 3:00 p.m. Participating tall ships include: Schooner Hindu, Appledore IV, US Brig Niagara, Tall Ship Windy, Denis Sullivan, Friends Good Will, Madeline, Pride of Baltimore II, Privateer Lynx, Halie and Matthew, Sorlandet, Unicorn, Pathfinder, Peacemaker, Playfair and Liana's Ransom.

  
  

• September 7

  Marching bands, classic cars, veterans, historical re-enactors and 1,200 Scouts help lead the War of 1812 Grand Parade through downtown Put-in-Bay at 4 p.m.

  Harbor Illumination: Lights of Peace sees flares lit at dusk around South Bass Island to commemorate the battle and the resulting peace between nations.

  
  

• September 8

  Catch a baseball game played by 19th-century rules at 2 p.m. when the Ohio Historical Society Muffins play the Put-in-Bay Mossbacks at the Mother of Sorrows Ball Field in Put-in-Bay.

• September 10

  A parade featuring Parks Canada re-enactors, First Nations representatives, regional marching bands and others starts in downtown Put-in-Bay and travels to Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial  for official ceremonies commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie that include a wreath laying at the battle site.

Ohio's Premier Wine Tasting Festival Slated for August 2 & 3

Vintage Ohio -- Ohio's premier wine and food event -- is just around the corner. Begin planning your trip to this year's event August 2 & 3 today.

The festival, which celebrates Ohio wineries and offers ample tastings, takes place annually at the Lake Metroparks Farmpark, in Kirtland, Ohio -- just outside of Cleveland. The two day event takes place from 1 to 10 p.m. each day.

I attended Vintage Ohio last year for the first time and was amazed by the number of tastings available -- along with the casual, fun atmosphere. From fresh food to order, samples, craft tents, live entertainment and even dessert from vendors such as East Coast Custard, the Vintage Ohio festival has much more to offer than simply wine.

Dress comfortably for what is usually a warm time of the year. Consider pairing your attendance at Vintage Ohio with a weekend getaway to Cleveland and all the metro area has to offer. Folks who attend the Friday night will be treated to fireworks at dusk as well. A special "Meet the Maker" event costs an additional $15 and gives one-on-one access to a winemaker along with 10 additional samples and a plate of light appetizers.

Insider Tip: Purchase your tickets at a Northeast Ohio Giant Eagle store for a discounted price. Alternately, if you are coming from out of town you can purchases tickets online or via phone in advance for a reduced price as well. Also note that tickets for designated drivers are sold at a reduced price too!

Celebrate Juneteenth in Ohio!

All around the country, African Americans will gather this weekend to celebrate June 19^th or Juneteenth, the day in which Texas slaves were informed they were free, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

For more than 140 years, our country has celebrated the freedom of the last slaves by having cookouts, concerts, festivals and more. For Ohioans, there are many activities recognizing the history and the significance of Juneteenth:

In Oberlin, gatherers celebrate all weekend at the Juneteenth Oberlin 2013 (June 13-15) with a picnic, memorial service and reenactment that leads up to the festival on Saturday, June 15^th at Tappan Square.

Columbus kicks off the weekend with the annual JuneteenthOhio Festival (June 14-16). This is Ohio’s longest-running and fastest growing event in Central Ohio. There is something for everyone to enjoy with weekend long events including an Underground Railroad Journey, soul food cook-off, talent and comedy shows, reggae and gospel concerts and a unity walk at Franklin Park.

Dayton’s Juneteenth Celebration (June 22) at W.S. McIntosh Memorial Park celebrates the 150th anniversary of the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation while honoring African American Union soldiers from the Dayton area.

Cincinnati recognizes the holiday with their annual Cincinnati Juneteenth Festival (June 15-16) at Daniel Drake Park. This year also includes a Father’s Day Concert featuring jazz, gospel and R&B acts.

Juneteenth is a wonderful way to discover the history of America and observe the freedom, resilience and achievement of African Americans. Ohio has a rich history with the anti-slavery movement and is home to many great Underground Railroad stops. When visiting one of the Juneteenth celebrations, make it a weekend trip and stop along the Underground Railroad. I’ll be in Columbus at the JuneteenthOhio Festival with TourismOhio’s multicultural team. Come say "hi" if you plan to attend!

How do you celebrate Juneteenth in Ohio?

Rocking with the Rolling Stones at the Rock Hall

When the Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, no one questioned it, because they deserved to be there. Their concerts were legendary, Mick Jagger commanded the stage and they changed the landscape of rock and roll. So when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland opened their new exhibit, The Rolling Stones: 50 Years of Satisfaction last week, I made sure I was there to see it.

 

 

As I walked through the red lipped doorway, an image that is synonymous with the Rolling Stones, it was clear to see why they are considered “The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band.” On display was a career that spans 50 years and they are still rocking!  With hits like “(I Can’t Get) No Satisfaction” and “Ruby Tuesday,” the Rolling Stones have become musical icons and this interactive exhibit takes you through how their music has stood the test of time over the decades.

 

 

 

The exhibit spans two and a half floors that are filled with Rolling Stones' history including photos, handwritten letters, set lists, instruments and clothing worn by the band in their concerts, like Mick Jagger’s hand-stitched British and American flag cape that he wore during their 1981-82 tour. There is also rare footage of the band including interviews and concerts where fans can get an intimate look at their 50 year career.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And while some people may want to have “moves like Jagger,” I found it interesting to learn who their early musical influences were. For example, the Rolling Stones were heavily inspired by legendary soul and blues musicians like Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. It was their music that took members, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards out of the London pubs and spawned an international career.

 

 

 

One cool new feature allows fans to contribute to the exhibit by uploading their own original images to share on Twitter and Instagram. By using the hashtag, #rockhallsatisfaction, fans can tag their personal photos of Rolling Stones memorabilia, artwork or Rolling Stones concert pictures that will then be displayed in the Rock Hall’s multimedia display.
