If geocaching is one of your favorite pastimes, Visit Lorain County has unveiled a fun way to explore northern Ohio on the new Geo Trail. Situated along the Lake Erie shoreline, the Back Roads and Beaches Bike and Multi-sport Route now offers a Geo Trail that families can enjoy.
Using a GPS-enabled device, treasure hunters use online clues to search for hidden caches, which are small containers.
The caches come in various sizes and each contains nominal items that can be traded as well as a log to document your visit.
The Back Roads and Beaches Geo Trail has a series of 15 caches. This is a great way for families to get in a little exercise and outdoor time while also looking for the hidden containers by using GPS coordinates.
A commemorative, trackable coin is offered to the first 250 participants who complete the Geo Trail passport. A link to all of the coordinates and the passport form are located on the Visit Lorain County website.
In addition to finding hidden treasure along the Geo Trail, your trip along the Back Roads and Beaches Route lets you experience recreational, historical, environmental, cultural and health-conscious adventures along the way.
The 60-mile loop runs mostly on State Route 6 and goes through Oberlin, Vermilion, Lorain, Sheffield Lake and Avon Lake in western Lorain County.
The Geo Trail is a fun way to explore the area. If you spend two or three days, you can leisurely take in some of the other Lorain County highlights like local wineries, galleries, and of course restaurants.
For example, you will pass historical locations that are part of the Underground Railroad, stops like the Allen Memorial Art Museum in Oberlin, and many restaurants like The Feve and Treehuggers Café that specialize in locally grown food.
It is easy to veer off the main drag to explore hiking trails, kayaking, zipline canopy tours and other outdoor adventures. You can also just enjoy the peaceful views as you search for your geocache coordinates.
Getting outdoors to enjoy the scenic rolling hills, farmland and forest along the Geo Trail is a breathtaking and relaxing way to enjoy northern Ohio. The trail is conveniently marked with bright green bike route signs so you do not get lost and downloadable maps are available for navigation.
