When I was younger, my dad used to have ice fishing parties on the small pond in front of our house. He would go out in the morning with an ice auger and drill fishing holes while my sister and I slid across the ice on our bellies. While he and his friends fished later, we would build snow ramps on the hill in our front yard and launch ourselves over them on snow tubes.
Nobody complained about the cold or the wet – because this was what a real winter weekend was supposed to be like: dressed up in snow suits and mittens with rosy cheeks and red noses.
For me, this time of year brings back fond family memories. The snow and the cold makes me think of being a kid again. So, when I learn about events that focus on that same sentiment, I always find myself wanting to go.
If you, too, are looking for that warm fuzzy feeling that a winter weekend brings, consider a visit to the Arctic Ice Festival in Sandusky Feb. 8, 2015.
Held at the Maritime Museum of Sandusky, this annual festival is a family-friendly event to celebrate winter. And ice.
Enjoy ice carving displays and competitions; programs and crafts for kids; ice boat races on the bay; an ice rescue demonstration by the Sandusky Fire Department, and even a bit of ice fishing. The event also includes a special winter exhibit inside the Maritime Museum, as well as ice harvesting demonstrations - at one point ice harvesting was a major commercial industry in Sandusky Bay.
When: February 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Events will take place at the Sandusky Sailing Club, Sandusky Bay Pavilion, Meigs Street Pier at Battery Park and the Maritime Museum of Sandusky, weather permitting.
How much: Entry is $1 per person
Take the whole family and start your own winter tradition!
