Nestled near between Columbus’ Historic Short North and the Arena District exists an incredible and eclectic foodie’s paradise: The North Market. Whether you’re looking for a weekend adventure or planning a trip to the city, North Market is, without a doubt, a must-see! Featuring everything from local produce, to artisan chocolates, to worldly cuisine, the market is the ideal location to sample some great grub or simply hang out and peruse the many vendors.
Originally established in 1876, The North Market is a Columbus landmark. Though the building that exists now is a reconstruction of the original, which burned down in a citywide fire, the concept remains largely the same. In the 1980s, the market was revitalized in an attempt to create economic growth in downtown Columbus, and North Market was also listed as a historic landmark.
Featured among the market’s 35 different merchants are a plethora of worldly cuisine vendors. One of my personal favorites is Lan Viet Vietnamese Market, which boasts some incredibly delicious pho and bahn mi. If you’re in search of some authentic Italian fare, the Pastaria whips up some of the best pasta this side of the Atlantic. For something on the sweeter side, Taste of Belgium is definitely a go-to, serving up decedent waffles and crepes. To put it simply, North Market is a perfect place to explore and sample some exotic and global flavors.
Many people also come to North Market to purchase locally produced groceries. The market hosts several delicatessens, bakeries, fish markets, butchers, and grocers, making it easy to find most of the items on your shopping list. During the warmer months, they feature a farmers market every Saturday, which sells fresh fruits and veggies, as well as other locally grown and produced fare. What an awesome way to spend a summer afternoon!
In addition to exotic gastronomical delights and local groceries, there is also a wide array of specialty vendors. These range from the pastry kitchen and café, Pistacia Vera, to the famous Jeni’s ice cream, to Barrel and Bottle’s array of wines and brews. While you’re visiting, you can also pick up non-edible treasures like specialty cookware and eco-friendly goods.
Throughout the year, North Market also features sponsored events. Coming up April 2014 is the Ohio Coffee Roast Brunch, among other activities posted on their website’s calendar. Their in-house NoMa Kitchen also teaches an assortment of cooking classes, where you can unleash your inner chef and food-critic!
The North Market is open for visitors every day of the week, with Monday’s being limited to a select few vendors. Now that you’ve gotten a little taste of what the market has to offer, head on over to 59 Spruce Street!
